Approaching week 27

We call you "the baby" because we don't know whether you are a boy or a girl. You've been kind to me so far - no nausea or sleepless nights and no extreme fatigue since the first trimester... just a little papaya weighing somewhere between 1.5 and 2 pounds these days. I like knowing that you can here my voice and like to imagine you opening your eyes. Life is good, little baby. Enjoy your last 3 months in there.

I hope you like your zebra rug. Your dad says its going to scare you, but I love it. What would be scary is a real bird in that bird cage above your bed. Don't worry, if you cry, I won't buy you a mocking bird...or any bird...

2010 Year End Greetings

It's been a great year. We are thankful that coming up with highlights from each month in 2010 was more difficult than it was in 2009. That's not to say that good things didn't happen, just that 2009 was BUSY with a new city, house, jobs and dog. 2010 was a year of enjoying these things before things get busy again with a new baby...

January: We left New Year's Day for a wonderful trip to the British Virgin Islands with my family. We enjoyed the week together on a 40 foot catamaran sailboat complete with a kitchen, bedrooms, showers. We sailed, snorkled and explored islands by day and shared meals and played games together in the evenings. Amazing and about as memorable as trips come!

February/March: Perhaps its because these are my least favorite months of the year that they get smashed together in this update. In February we collected bids on some major structural work in our basement while the work actually took place in March. The job cleared out lots of old wooden beams and created more space with 3 new support columns and 1 large beam. It's still an unfinished basement but now has more room for Nate's woodworking tools. Sorry, we forgot to take a before picture!

April: I don't like February and March because its usually just cold and gross outside. Thankfully April brought a beautiful spring which motivated me to do some gardening. When I was out jogging, I would take note of plants that I liked in other people's yards. The blue star juniper (the lollipop looking one in the middle) was my favorite addition to the garden this year.

May: Georgia, Nate's youngest sister led her ultimate frisbee team to the semi-finals of the national college tournament. For us, the best part was that it was held in Madison this year. So Memorial Day weekend was full of hot sun and ultimate frisbee. That same weekend, I ran the Madison 1/2 Marathon, finishing with a great time despite the unusual heat for that time of year.

June: I became an aunt and Nate became an uncle! Grace gave birth to Cohen Jack on June 8th in Monterey, CA. He's super-cute and Grace and John Paul have done an awesome job of sending videos and pictures so we feel like we are there watching him grow! At the end of the month, we turned our back porch into a stage and hosted a house benefit concert to raise money for ACT 8. We didn't sing, but our talented friends did.

July: The month began with a camping/road trip around Lake Michigan with our good friends Paul and Abbie. We went north through WI and up to Door County before heading to the Upper Peninsula, Mackinac Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore, Holland and Grand Rapids. Mid-month, my sister Sarah returned to Washington DC after a year in Baghdad. At the end of the month, Nate and I rode our bikes over 300 miles in 3 1/2 days for an HIV/AIDS fundraiser - ACT 8! What a month.

August: The day of our 3rd wedding anniversary, August 18th, we found out we were pregnant! I think the timing is so awesome because when we first got married, people asked when we were going to have kids and we would say, "Oh, we want to wait three years or so." That night we went out for sushi to celebrate our marriage - I just had to stay away from the raw stuff to protect the little poppyseed inside. One other exciting thing happened in August - our Ultimate Frisbee summer league team won the competetive division championship. Nate has been trying to clinch this title since 1997, so its quite a feat.

September: Nate bought cherry wood from a guy nearby with plans to start our new kitchen cabinets. He's doing all the work himself and the lower cabinets are now installed. Our new Silestone counter-tops should be installed by the end of January. It's a slow process since Nate also has a full-time job, but it's very much worth the wait. The lower cabinets are beautiful...you'll just have to wait until the whole kitchen is complete to see photos! Oh, and Nate wanted me to add that I turned 28 this month...next year is my GOLDEN birthday :)

October: My good friend Laura and I traveled to Tampa, FL to cheer on Nate and his men's ultimate team at Club Nationals. They finished 10th out of 16 teams and despite having a baby on the way, his 2nd trip to nationals in 2 years got him thinking about how he can play again next year. We'll cross that bridge when we get there...its a big time commitment! The most memorable part of the trip for Laura was learning the team's ridiculous cheer: "MURDER BALLS, MURDER BALLS, STAB, STAB, KILL!"

November: Wow - it got super-cold really fast. I remember hearing that the high on Thanksgiving Day would be around 20 degrees and thinking how cold that sounded after such an extended summer and warm fall. Luckily Nate had a work trip in San Diego and I was able to go with him. We saw my mom's extended family as well as Nate's mom's twin brother and family. Unfortunately the weather was rainy, but we still found great restaurants like The Mission, breweries like Stone Brewing Co and wineries like Longshadow Ranch Vineyard to to explore and enjoy.

December: Advent season is one of our favorite times of the year. We hosted the 2nd Annual Ugly Mug Exchange and some of our dear friends had the idea to gift all the ugly, second hand mugs to us by hiding them around the house before leaving for the evening (the rules of the part are: bring a mug, take a mug...white elephant style. But alas, they tricked us and I am still finding mugs to this day. We flew to Washington DC to spend Christmas with my family and had a really nice, relaxing time. So relaxed in-fact, that we didn't take any pictures, so I'll leave you with our family Christmas picture taken in front of our small, live, Christmas tree.

17 weeks!

Oh Baby!

Even though strangers can't tell I'm pregnant yet, we took our first belly profile picture last week! In the picture I'm 13 weeks along. It kind of just looks like I'm sticking my belly out, doesn't it? Nate has thoughts of taking a picture of me every single day in the same location, wearing the same outfit so that he can make a flip book. I'm thinking we're gonna miss a few days.


Nate is feeling more like a father these days driving around his new 2001 Prius. In anticipation of rain, snow and a more chaotic life, we gave in and became a 2-car family. The good news is that it was Nate's dad's car and still sports a bumper sticker that reads, "Ultimate Dad." I do think he'll be the ultimate dad for our little bitty baby, but its more about ultimate frisbee than it is about bragging about his fathering skills. It's fitting because as the baby grows into an ultimate frisbee player, Nate is taking off for Club Nationals this week. His team is thrilled to be going again this year!

The Beat Is On!

It's my 28th birthday and the 10th week birthday for the little kumquat inside! Today Nate and I went to the doctor to hear our baby's heart beat. They say that you have a pretty good chance of hearing it between 10 and 12 weeks. I'll be 10 weeks pregnant tomorrow. When I explained to the nurse that I've been feeling pretty darn good so far, I think she got nervous that things might not be good. But within a couple of seconds of pushing a little probe around on my belly, we heard it - the whoosh whoosh whoosh of a tiny heart! As it beat along I felt a couple of tears roll down my cheeks. Exciting! Nate was pretty pumped too. He took out his mp3 player and captured the "whoosh" so we could share it with you.



We're thrilled to be parents, but also very aware that our lives are going to change drastically. To help prepare, we're making a list of all the restaurants in Madison that we've been wanting to try. We'll do our best to enjoy good food and virgin cocktails until it becomes a little bit harder to do so. Once the list actually materializes, maybe we'll share it with you so you can hold us accountable. :) Tonight we're off to Graze - a new "gastro pub."

We Survived ACT 8!

 

300+ miles later, we're back in Madison with tired legs and new friends! The ride was great - up to Baraboo, across to Spring Green, down to Albany and finally back to Madison for a big celebration in front of the capital. There were a few challenging hills, but for the most part we felt ready for each and every mile that we peddled through.

Thank you to everyone who supported us with good wishes and/or dollar bills! People living with HIV/AIDS in and around Madison will be better taken care of because of you.

Devil's Lake!

The weather continues to amaze me. A group of us went camping at Devil's Lake last weekend and Andrew and I rode our bikes from Madison. Two hours before leaving, we weren't sure if we were actually going to ride since there was rain in the forecast. The chances of heavy rain dwindled, so we took a chance. The ride was challenging, but awesome. Nate and Anne drove the camping gear and had pie iron pizza assembly all set up when we arrive just after sunset. Apparently Nate had the camera all ready....
We enjoyed a relatively fancy breakfast on Saturday morning before leaving the campsite for 2 beautiful hikes - Parfrey's Glen and the bluffs around the lake. Its been a while since I've posted a picture of my miracle dog Ries, so here goes :) (She's a miracle dog because she got hit by a car 2 weeks ago and is still alive!)

300 Miles July 29 - August 1

The farthest I ever rode a bike in one day was 40 miles. That was a few weeks after getting my bike...a gift from lovely husband-to-be, at the time. Now I have 2 bikes. After riding my heavy commuter bike around town, I realized how much I LOVE my eBay bike that Nate gave me - its black, light, and as far as bikes go, I think it's hot.

That's part of the reason I just signed up to ride 300 miles in 3 1/2 days. The other reason is that I like my job - working as a dietitian and treatment support services coordinator at AIDS Network. One of the ways that AIDS Network raises money is by hosting a 300 mile bike ride every summer. Each rider is required to raise $1200. Lots of people raise more than that, but for our first ride, Nate and I are shooting for the minimum. Who knows - maybe we'll raise more.

Spring in Madison

I don't really remember last spring being particularly late here in Madison, but I still seemed to have this attitude this year that in Wisconsin, warm weather doesn't arrive until June. Its April 28th and we've already had many warm days. The grass is green, there are interesting flowers everywhere, and I've enjoyed many outdoor runs, bike rides and ultimate games.

When I got home from work today, the sun was shining on the front of the house and lighting up the crab apple tree in our front yard. By the time I got the camera, the light was less ideal, but I still like this picture. I like our house. I love our neighborhood. Spring is here.
