What Were We Doing In Africa?!

Welcome to our blog! Nate and I used this blog to share our stories, pictures and thoughts from our trip to Kampala, Uganda in 2008. :)

Q: How did the idea of going to Africa come to be?
A: To complete my Master of Public Health degree at GW I have to complete a thesis of sorts. Since my concentration is global health, I've been encouraged to travel abroad for at least 4 months to experience public health in a developing country. My sister, Sarah and her husband Dan have been living in Kampala since October '07, so we're also using this as an opportunity to spend time with them!

Q: Is your husband going with you? :)
A: Of course! It was too sad leaving him behind when I went to India! As you can see from Nate's postings, he will be doing engineering work with a group called Engineering Ministries International. We're both equally excited about this trip - neither one of us is dragging the other along!

Q: Is Engineering Ministries International like Engineers Without Borders?
A: As most of you know, Nate's dad Pete was a faculty advisor for EWB at the University of Wisconsin. In 2006, Nate was fortunate enough to travel with Pete and his students to Thailand. During this trip he caught the 'developing country engineering fever,' and was inspired to follow in Pete's footsteps. When Pete passed away from cancer in November, this developed into an even stronger passion for Nate. So yes, eMi and EWB do similar work, but eMi is a Christian organiztion and EWB is most often affiliated with universities.

Q: How long are you staying?
A: We plan to return to Washington D.C. on December 20th, but if we can find paying jobs, we might stay longer.

Q: Will you live in a hut?
A: Not exactly. We'll be living in Sarah and Dan's house with them. People have told me that Embassy housing is very nice.

Q: Are you raising support for your trip?
A: No. We've been fortunate enough to live rent-free with my parents for the past 2 months, so we've been able to save money to fund our trip.

Q: Did you get your shots?
A: Yes

Q: Is it safe in Uganda?
A: Yes. Northern Uganda has its problem spots, but we'll be in Kampala
